Prior to 1985, Largemouth Bass were managed with a 12-inch size limit (five per day). Annual stockings of Striped Bass and Hybrid Striped Bass continue in order to maintain these fisheries (other species are self-sustaining). Blueback Herring and Threadfin Shad were successfully introduced in the 1980’s to provide additional forage for pelagic (open-water) predators. Initial stockings began in 1972, with introductions of Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Redear Sunfish, and Channel Catfish. The impoundment was completed in 1972 and serves as cooling water for the North Anna Nuclear Power Station. Each Veteran's Day, amongst the sea of Stars & Bars, are three Federal soldiers buried there -beneath our US flag. The hundreds of dead were carted down VA-208, about a mile west to the Confederate Cemetery which by the way, is never mentioned in the standard local tours. The old Harris Farmhouse was used as a triage for the wounded & dying. The iconic photo of the dead Confederate soldier splayed out on the split rail fence became a metaphor for the tragedy of The Civil War. We had an enjoyable end-of-summer day.Įned here.
I would come again but during the off-season when the park is not as crowded as in the summer. Camping charges vary according to site type. Fees for boat launch and equestrian is $5. Admission to the park is $7 per car off-season and $10 per car in-season. The beach area seemed to be the exception. Most of the people on the trails and around the park grounds were wearing masks because of Covid-19 precautions in place. I read steps are being taken to clean up the algae. One thing I noticed was the amount of algae blooms in some areas of the lake. There are strategically-placed benches throughout the park for those who simply want to sit and enjoy nature. Horseback riding is available for those so inclined.
Most of the 13-miles of trails are rated easy except for three rated difficult: Big Woods, Pigeon Run and Gold Hill trails. The campgrounds offer tent, RV, yurt, lodge and cabin (some lake front) sites.
Besides the beach, there are picnic pavilions, playgrounds, a fish pond for children and handicapped, miles of trails, picnicking, boat launch, concession stand, and visitor center. The park has many amenities for all ages. I don’t know if they were enforcing this in the off-season. This is the first state park I have been to that charged for using the beach but I guess it is to help defray the cost of lifeguards. There is a sign as you approach the beach stating wrist bands must be purchased for beach access for adults ($4) and children over 3 ($2). Many people took advantage of the warm weather to enjoy the sandy beach and swimming area. We visited yesterday (October 24th) as it was a beautiful fall day. Lake Anna state Park opened in 1983 and quickly became a favorite for visitors. Lake Anna came to be in 1972 when it was created by Dominion Power as a coolant for its nuclear power plant. Did you know people mined for gold at Lake Anna State Park property in the 1800s? This area was known as “Gold Hill” and was home to the Goodwin Gold Mill.
